What You Need to Know About Asbestos Removal and Demolition

If you are getting a building wholly or partially demolished, there is always the chance that there will be asbestos containing materials in the building, especially if it was built before the late 1980s. Asbestos is an extremely dangerous material (especially if it becomes airborne) so it needs to be removed by specially licensed contractors in accordance to strict procedures.

If you suspect that your building contains asbestos, you will first need to get confirmation that it does, by having an asbestos inspection done. If your building contains asbestos, you will need to hire a demolition contractor that holds the appropriate asbestos removal license. One license allows the contractor to remove bonded asbestos (sheets etc) while the other is for friable asbestos (which is loose asbestos that easily becomes airborne). The demolition contractor will need to know how to appropriately demolish the building so that the asbestos is contained at all times. Usually, they will remove the asbestos and decontaminate the site before going ahead with total demolition.
