Luke and David have built their life together for the past decade. They own a small and beautiful apartment with vaulted ceilings and tons of natural light.
However, Luke has faced a number of challenges over the years which he shopped his way through to make himself feel better, a process that David admits he has enabled.
Now the couple find themselves left with a mountain of comfort clutter – furniture, homewares and trinkets galore, that makes the simple act of moving around the home almost impossible.
The living room is jam packed and the guest bedroom that is also David’s home office is so over filled with clutter there is only a small corner for him to work from.
“The amount of items crammed into a small townhouse is staggering,” says decluttering guru Peter Walsh “It’s no surprise it felt really oppressive.”
Luke and David used to love nothing more than having friends over and entertaining, but the clutter has made that more and more difficult.
Their home was also made smaller by all the stuff that had accumulated over the years along with the multiple pieces of furniture that were way too big for the space “It’s just all over the shop,” says renovation expert Cherie Barber.
Luke and David have an eclectic and retro style and they do have some great pieces, “This is funk city!” says treasure hunter Angie Kent, there’s just too many of them.
Once their belongings are cleared and boxed up for sorting, Cherie turns her attention to the renovation to reinvigorate their home as a funky party place.
The existing carpet was dated, about 30 to 40 years old, the light fixtures hail from the 1970s, the ladder into the attic dominated the space and the living room was in desperate need of a makeover.
To tackle the job, Cherie turns to her team of painters, electricians, carpenters and floorers booked through the hipages app.
Breathing life back into Luke and David’s home Cherie and the reno team go for a bold lounge club vibe in the living room with a chocolate brown feature wall along with a touch of contrasting blue one a second smaller wall. To lessen the dominance of the ladder, Cherie also painted the ladder the same chocolate brown so that it blends into the wall.
The tired carpet was replaced with timber floorboards that complement the feature wall, and the old lighting fixtures were replaced with a row of stylish pendant lights.
The same timber flooring from the lounge was also laid in the entrance way to create cohesion through the split level townhouse. A stylish timber batten feature wall installed at the top of the stairs, along with a number of carefully selected artworks from Luke and David’s keep pile completed the look.

David’s home office was crammed full of stuff with only a small desk in the corner. To create a functional room the team installed a new timber desk that runs the whole length of the window giving him an enormous workspace, with storage underneath to keep things tidy.
Plus, the room now has a big feature wall covered in a bold print that David notes will “look fantastic in my Zoom calls.”
