The power of paint to transform your home
It needn’t take a major renovation to transform your home. For homeowner Lisa Hutchinson, it was skilled painters who really made the difference.
It needn’t take a major renovation to transform your home. For homeowner Lisa Hutchinson, it was skilled painters who really made the difference.
Lisa Hutchison and her family had been through some hard times and their home had gotten “out of control” because of that.
So, in 2022 Lisa’s mum nominated the family for Channel 9’s decluttering show Space Invaders to “give us a hand and say thanks for all the support I’ve given quite a few family members”, Lisa says.
What they anticipated being a chance to create a calmer, less cluttered space at their NSW home, turned into something so much bigger, thanks to the Space Invaders hosts and their team of trusted tradies.
“They wanted to help us with the amount of stuff that was in our house but also, through the renovations, they wanted to bring the house up to a level that did it justice,” Lisa says.
While various renovations on the living and kitchen areas were undertaken, it was the paintwork on the walls, ceilings and doors that stole the show, proving you don’t need a major renovation project to make a big difference to a home.
After an early hiccup, when the original painters from a different contractor had to be replaced, the Space Invaders team logged on to hipages to search the directory for new painters who were available at short notice to fix the issues and complete the job.
The results were stunning. The colours – lemon-based neutral, sage green accent walls and “very white” ceilings – and overall work transformed a space that was previously somewhat depressing.
“They were an incredible team … their attention to detail was fantastic,” Lisa says.
“They spent a lot of time picking up any imperfections on the ceilings and walls, sanding them back and then painting them to make sure it all looked brand new. The job that they’ve done has just lifted the mood here completely.
After previous attempts at doing their own painting but never getting it right, the house now finally “feels like home”, according to Lisa. And she says they would never paint anything themselves again.
“Things like fixing little holes in the walls before painting – it was lumpy when we did it, but they were able to get it looking like a brand new wall,” Lisa says.
“It was the same with the ceilings. We had quite a lot of cracks and they fixed them with full patchwork. It looks seamless now, which I never thought would be possible.”
“Our house was very dark before and we had poor lighting in our main living area. Now it feels light and bright - it feels like a breath of fresh air when you walk in the door.”
Lisa’s message to others considering making some home improvements? Get in experienced, high-quality tradies from a trusted source to do the job properly.
“Unless you know what you’re doing, don’t waste your time. It’s worth the money investing in proper tradies because you’re looking at it every day,” she says.
“They know what they’re doing, they do it every day and just do a better job. It will also last you a lot longer, so the investment in paying someone to do it, you’ll get that back in spades.”
