What are the different types of plastering?
Plastering is mainly applied to interior walls, while render or rendering is for exterior walls.The main types are solid wall and wet plastering.
Wet plastering is a mixture applied to a solid wall to create a smooth, even surface that can be painted. Dry wall or solid plastering, is used to create interior wall linings and partitions. Dry wall plastering, is also known as plasterboard or by its trade name, Gyprock.
Both these types require different skills, and you need to know which one is right for your project before you get started.
Solid wall
Solid wall plastering is when a wet plaster made up of lime, cement or gypsum, and water is applied to an internal wall using a trowel. It creates a smooth or textured surface that covers your underlying brickwork or plasterboard. This surface can then be painted to achieve the desired finish. It is a skilled job, especially if you are covering entire walls in a home. This is when you need to hire a professional.
Partitioning
Partitioning is the use of plasterboard and steel stud and track framing systems to create walls. In a home this is an affordable and efficient system to create a separate room. Plasterboard partitions are also known by the trade name, Gyprock. Once erected doors can be added to the partition frames to complete the room. These surfaces can then be painted. Some professionals will specialise in partitioning, or provide a range of services, such as dry wall plastering, suspended ceiling and ornamental plastering.
Dry wall
Dry wall plastering involves attaching large sheets of plasterboard or drywall to timber or metal studs, often over a layer of wall insulation. It is a popular way to line the interior of a home because it is quick to install and a lot more cost effective than wet plaster. Drywall is made from a combination of paper, gypsum plaster and clay - which is durable and easy to repair. You may also hear it referred to as Gyprock, which is a trade name for plasterboard in Australia. It is also fire-rated for the health and safety of your home and family.
Ornamental
Ornamental plaster, otherwise known as decorative plaster, is used to create ornate features like ceiling roses, cornices and columns in heritage properties. Ornamental plaster is usually poured into a mould, though today some of these are manufactured from different materials. Ornamental plaster products today come in a wide range of styles, from period styles such as federation, gothic, art deco or Victorian to modern designs and patterns. This is a specialist job that requires a lot of skill, which some plasterers specialise in.
Repairs
The most common repairs are due to cracking, damp/water damage, building movement and hard objects penetrating the surface. You could also be renovating or extending your existing home, and need to repair the existing plaster after the works are finished. When you get quotes, businesses typically work out a rate based on the area being repaired.
