How to hire the best local Wire Fence Installer near you?

Wire fences are an often overlooked option when we think about what we want on our property boundary. Though we usually think about getting our white picket fence, sometimes wire fencing is a better fit for your home.

Read on for more information about getting a wire fence for your home, including:

What is wire fencing?

When we think about wire fences, it’s easy to go to the image of simple fences on farms and paddocks, made to keep wildlife in or out and preferring function over looks. Luckily, they are so much more than that.

At their core, wire fencing is made from durable metal wires that are strung between two posts to make panels, meaning they are long-lasting and incredibly resilient.

Most people who want a wire fence love the extra security it can provide to their property. There’s a reason it’s a common type of fence used in commercial or public spaces, and is an ideal security option while allowing unobstructed views.

Another benefit of wire fencing that’s making a comeback is using it as a trellis to grow food as it’s the perfect frame to grow any vine, from the classic choko to the more flavourful passionfruit. Not only will these provide food for your household, the leaves also add an extra layer of privacy.

What are the different types of wire fencing

When it comes to choosing a wire fence that suits your needs and home, there are many options. More often than not, the choices will come down to materials and the method for securing them.

Welded wire fencing

Welded wire fences have wires that usually run horizontally and vertically. Everywhere the wires intersect is welded to create a sturdy and lightweight fence. Welded wire fences are often a little more expensive than other types of wire fences but they are sleek and incredibly durable.

Woven wire fencing

Other than welded wire fences, woven wire fences are possibly the most common type you could choose. They’re similar to welded fences, using horizontal and vertical wires, but instead of welding at the intersections, they weave the wires around each other.

Chain link fences are one of the most common forms of woven wire fencing. They are easy to get in different thicknesses (called gauges) and primarily used for containing livestock but aren’t the most visually appealing fencing option.

Electric fences

Another common option for livestock, electric fences usually have horizontal wires between posts that are electrified to shock (but not injure) anything that comes into contact with it.

Barbed wire fencing

A classic fence used throughout the Aussie countryside, barbed wire fences are a common security option for those with large properties or livestock. Featuring sharp pointed barbs spaced regularly along horizontal wires, they are great at keeping predators out and livestock in.

Aluminium wire fences

Aluminium is one of the most popular options for a wire fence in residential areas. It’s not as durable as some other types of wire fencing but it's lightweight and very low-maintenance. Aluminium can also conduct electricity and can be used for an electric fence.

Steel wire fencing

A slightly more expensive material, steel wire fences are more durable than aluminium and can also be electrified. They are resistant to corrosion and have a long life span.

Vinyl-coated wire fencing

Vinyl-coated wire fencing uses a vinyl coating over the wires which are then either woven or welded. You’ll usually find them in green or black and the vinyl coating makes them softer when humans or animals make contact with it. You can often see them around swimming pools or playgrounds for this reason. They are less expensive than steel wiring and great for anyone with kids.

How much does wire fence installation cost?

Wire fence installation will depend on several factors including:

  • The size of the area you need enclosed by the fence
  • Type and material of wire fence you choose
  • Design of the fencing
  • Access to your property (harder-to-reach properties can cost more)
  • Labor costs from your wire fencing installer

When you get in contact with your wire fence installer, you’ll likely get a quote per hour. Your installer will likely work this out by using a cost per metre though, so if you know how many metres of fencing you need, you can get a rough idea of what you may need to pay. On average, the typical installer costs between $60 - $120 per metre.

Are there regulations for wire fencing?

Fencing standards are affected by many factors, including materials, height and location. To make sure your fence installation is to spec, we recommend you contact your local council for the regulations that apply where you live. Your fence builder or installer should also be across the relevant laws in your area.

There are also specific laws around pool fencing that are there to protect children from drowning. These include:

  • The height of pool fences and gates should be at least 1.2 metres
  • Gaps between vertical pickets should be no more than 100 millimetres
  • There should be no climbable objects or structures within 900mm of pool fencing
  • All fencing and gates should have a child safety lock

How to get quotes for wire fence installation

At hipages, we always recommend getting at least three quotes before hiring a tradie. The cheapest option may not always be the best one and you may find that there are additional costs down the line that can add up. Getting more than one quote also allows you to weigh up the experience, expertise and quality of work from different tradies - helping you make the most informed decision.

Hiring the right wire fence installer can make the whole process go smoothly and it’s a good idea to ask them a couple of questions to make sure you get the right person for the job. Some of these questions include:

  • How much experience do you have with wire fence installation?
  • Are you licensed to install wire fencing on my property?
  • What are your qualifications?
  • Are you insured to work in my home?
  • Can you provide a written quote?
  • Do you have references I can follow up on?

Wire Fencing FAQs

How much is rural fencing installation in Australia?

On top of the material costs, you're likely to have to pay labour costs too. For one tradie to install rural fencing, expect to pay around $66 an hour. You can often pay a bit more to get two people on the job, which normally results in it being done more quickly.

Are there any other types of wire fencing I can get?

Other common options for wire fencing are chicken wire and hog wire fencing. Chicken wire fencing is often used to enclose small pets like chickens or to protect gardens from pests. Hogwire is made in strong welded grids that provide extra security while allowing for less obstructed views. They aren’t ideal for these with small pets though as they can escape through the fence gaps.
